What to see in Oslo

There are lots of nice parks, beaches, cafes, shops, restaurants and bars in Oslo. However, if you want to do some sightseeing we can recommend the following

  • Holmenkollen Ski Jump – skiing museum and lift to the top with a view over Oslo
  • Vigelandsparken – park filled with statues by famous (but controversial) Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland
  • The Bygdøy museums – Fram museum and Kon Tiki museum + Viking museum
  • Norsk Folkemuseum – Norwegian history museum with old Norwegian buildings
  • Oslo city beach by the Opera building
  • Edward Munch gallery – brand new museum stuffed full with Munch paintings, including three versions of the scream.
  • Nasjonal Museet – even newer National Museum, combining four collections of art, architecture and design
  • Astrup Fearnley Museet – modern art museum on Tjuovholmen looking out over the Oslo fjord.
  • Walk along Akerselva – very pretty river running through the middle of the city
  • Walk through our favourite neighbourhoods in Oslo – Start in Grønland, and walk up to Fuglen Coffee Roasters, follow the main road up to Vålerenga and into Vålerenga Kirken, across to Kampen Kirken and then down back into the city through Tøyen.

Suggestions for trips around Norway

There are many beautiful hikes in Norway, including Besseggen, Knutshø and Galdhøpiggen (4-5 hours drive from Oslo), as well as Trolltunga and Preikestolen (8 hours drive from Oslo). If you do not want to rent a car in Oslo, you can access several of the hikes by train or bus from Oslo Bussterminal.

We also recommend getting the train to Bergen, which involves a beautiful journey over the mountains which run down the middle of the country.
